When we look at women's volleyball in Turkey, Derya Cayirgan is one of the most experienced names . She played in both Galatasaray and Fenerbahce and is currently continuing her career at the PTT . As a team, we had a pleasant interview with Derya on many topics from her goals to her career, from her advice to young people, from what she does in her spare time...
- The last stop in your career was the PTT... How is this season going for you?
First and foremost, we achieved our goals by winning matches. That's why I can say that everything is fine now. We have now set new goals. This means first to the play-offs and then to the European cups. We are working really hard for this. But you know that we experienced a great disaster that hurt everyone deeply. Our 11 provinces have almost disappeared. During this process, we had to take a one-month break from the league. We are currently trying to recover both physically and mentally. As a Gaziantep citizen, I offer my condolences and patience to all our relatives and our nation. I hope we can heal our wounds together as soon as possible.”
- Before the defeats of Fenerbahce and Eczacibasi, you caught a series of 3 matches. So, is the PTT where it is targeting ?
“As I said in the first question, our only thought right now is to make it to the playoffs. But when we look at the general picture, of course, we are not where we are aiming at the moment. There are matches that we narrowly missed and lost a couple of times. If we could have won those matches, we could have relaxed a little more. But despite everything, I think we are a very good team. We have both experienced and young names. We think that we will be where we want when we continue in line with our goal and end the next matches with a win.”
- You played for two big teams and you are a very experienced name. Is there anything in your career that you say you can't do?
“As you said, I played both in Galatasaray and Fenerbahce. It occupies a really important place in the career of a volleyball player. But when I think about my whole career, there's something, but I wouldn't say. Because I think I will do it no matter what.”
- We know that you have a romantic connection with Galatasaray. Can we see
you again in a yellow-red jersey one day?
“My childhood love, my most sensitive point Galatasaray, I do not hide it. Of course, I would like to wear the yellow-red jersey somewhere in the rest of my career. God knows, it's good."
“Of course I define it that way. I really enjoy playing volleyball first. I also love helping people. To make them laugh when appropriate on the field, to support them in fulfilling their self-confidence... I do my best for all of them. Besides, looking at the team's roster, I'm an older sister, so first of all I need to motivate them on the field. I try not to let them fall. I will always continue to be the driving force behind them.”
'They should work hard at first'
- As one of the experienced names in Turkish volleyball, what advice would you give to young people on the path to professionalism?
“I really worked hard to come here, to look back and leave a good career. Of course, like every athlete, there were times when I got angry, but I never gave up. I always struggled with the difficulties that came my way and waited for the right time to come. So, first of all, they should work very, very hard. Then they should not give up in the face of difficulties and wait patiently.”
'We show the power of women'
- Volleyball was the branch that attracted the most attention after football. Does this make you happy?
“I have to say it really makes me happy. Because our success shows how well and how correctly we do our job. The biggest factor that makes us happy is that we get paid for our efforts. Everyone talks about how successful women's volleyball is. We show everyone how strong women are. I think we have proven how successful women are in their jobs and can achieve anything they want.”

- Who are the coaches you find most successful in Turkey?
“All the coaches I have worked with are really successful for me, I learned something from them. Apart from volleyball, the two branches I follow are football and basketball. Fatih Terim in Football... Also, there is Okan Buruk, the Technical Director of Galatasaray Football Team. He is also one of the coaches I find successful. In basketball, Ergin Ataman, the coach of both Anadolu Efes and the National Men's Basketball Team ...”
