Hubert Hurkacz's amazing match in Monte Carlo, unbelievable. He combined a thriller and a marathon:
Hubert Hurkacz (ATP 12) advanced to the second round of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Monte Carlo. The Pole was losing to the Serbian Laslo Djere (ATP 58) already 6:7, 3:5 to lead to the third set and not use four match balls in it. There was a tie-break in which Hurkacz was slightly better. He won the match 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5), and 7-6 (5) after three hours and 17 minutes of play.
After a completely unsuccessful performance in Estoril, Hubert Hurkacz is still waiting for his first victory this season on clay. On Sunday, the Pole started his participation in the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Monte Carlo, where in the first round he faced the 58th in the world ranking Serb Laslo Djere. And although he was the favourite of this confrontation, it was necessary to remember that clay is the least liked surface for a Polish tennis player.
Great nerves and Hurkacz's victory in Monte Carlo. And he was already losing 6-7, 3-5...
And the fact that Hurkacz has problems on the ground surface was confirmed at the very beginning of the Sunday meeting. Although Djere is not a world-class tennis player, he probably won his service games, and on the first occasion, he broke Hurkacz and took the lead 3: 0.
The Pole, who had great problems with hitting the serve and forehand at the start of the competition, became more and more effective over time. In turn, Djere started to make mistakes more often, thanks to which in the seventh game Hurkacz managed to win the game with the rival's service to 15 and make up for the loss of the break.
Although in the eleventh game, Hurkacz even had two break points with a lead of 15:40, in the end, the first set was decided by a tie-break. In it, Hurkacz was already leading 4:1 and had two serves, but he wasted this advantage in concert. Djere scored four points in a row, and then with a 5: 5 draw, Hurkacz missed two more forehands and lost the first set 6: 7.
This match was not at a high level and in terms of nice actions dominated by mistakes on both sides. The second set started in exactly the opposite way to the first. It was Hurkacz who won two of his own service games to zero and quickly broke his opponent to lead 3:0.
And although the Pole seemed to be in control of events, he quickly lost this control. After a hard-fought advantage game, he broke down to 3-2 soon after, which also allowed Djere to tie the score after 3.
However, the Serb did not stop and went with the blow. He quickly broke Hurkacz to 15, won the fourth game in a row and was on track to win in two sets in the entire meeting. After a while, he also won in the fifth, not without any problems winning his own serve at 5:3, although Hurkacz had three break points in this game.
The Pole was against the wall but managed to escape from under it in great style. First, he interrupted the rival's series and won his serve confidently, and then, despite playing the advantage on the serve, Djere did not allow him to even one match ball and led to a 5: 5 draw. Finally, there was a second tie-break in this match, in which Hurkacz, who was playing very aggressively at the time, had the initiative all the time. This brought him an effect, because although there was no shortage of spectacular exchanges, the Pole won 7:5 this time, and in the whole set 7:6.
There were no breaks in the third set this time. Although in the third game, on Djere's service, Hurkacz had a breakpoint, six balances and after nine minutes of the game he had to finally recognize the superiority of his rival. Till 3:3 both tennis players were winning their own serve.
Finally, the seventh game came, in which server Djere caused problems for himself. After his double mistake, Hurkacz had a lead of 15:40 and two chances to break. The Serb defended himself with two very good serves, but after a while, the Pole with a brave attack won the third break point. This one ended with Djere hitting the net and the first break in the third set, fortunately in favour of Hubert, who took the lead 4:3.
After a while, Hurkacz confirmed the break with a service game won to zero at 5:3, and although his rival responded with a winning pass after the game, the Pole served for the victory in the entire match. Hurkacz had as many as four match balls, including three in the tenth game of the third set, but he did not use any of them. However, as soon as Djere won a break point, he threw everything on one card and with an effective offence led to a draw after 5. With the score 5: 6, Hurkacz had to defend the match ball himself, but then he played three service aces in a row and very effectively led to a tie-break.
The tie-break was extremely even. With a 5:5 draw, it was clear that single points would decide about advancing to the second round. At the decisive moment, however, Djere made two minimal mistakes and here Hurkacz won the decisive game 7:5.
Hubert Hurkacz after 3 hours and 17 minutes of the game defeated the Serbian Laslo Djere 7:6 (5), 6:7 (5), 7:6 (5) and advanced to the second round of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Monte Carlo, where he will face the better of Sebastian Baez (ATP 32, Argentina ) - Jack Draper (ATP 61, Great Britain).
